Maranatha Caring Mission was established to provide free medical clinics in the developing countries, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, provide clean water to the thirsty, and other works as the Spirit directs. It is in keeping with the injunction of our Lord Jesus in Matthew 25:40 "whatever you do to the least of my brethren that you do unto me." Our mission at Maranatha is to share the love of Jesus and reach out to the poor. The first clinic was established on November 12, 2016, in Umueje, Anambra State, Nigeria. The people in this area are predominately peasant farmers who live in impoverished, abject, and unhealthy conditions, and lack health care.

Eye disease is very prevalent in Umueje and its surrounding towns. Several patients are suffering from one eye disease or the other and the majority of these patients are susceptible to CATARACTS. This is because Umueje and its surrounding towns are mostly riverine communities so RIVERBLINDNESS is prominent in the area due to the parasites from the water. The majority of these rural dwellers are peasant farmers producing rice and cassava with crude implements. During the harvesting and processing of rice and cassava, their eyes are often affected in some circumstances, the injury sustained to the lens leads to traumatic cataracts.

We have provided free medical care to 19,154 patients and performed 244 free CATARACTS and PTERYGIUM surgeries. Since March 2020, we added new services including APPENDECTOMY, HERNIORRHAPHY, and HYDROCELECTOMY. We have performed 40 of the newly added services (surgeries) for the greater glory of God and because you CARE. Thank you!

At the moment, there are 180 patients on the waiting list for cataract surgeries and 30 patients on the waiting list for Herniorrhaphy and Hydrocelectomy. It costs an equivalent of $100 to perform one cataract surgery and $20.00 to provide one month of eye care after the cataract surgery. One Appendectomy or Herniorrhaphy cost $50.00.

Please we need your HELP to continue to provide free medical care to these impoverished patients on the waiting list who desperately have a great need for CATARACT SURGERIES and other surgeries. We are in need of your financial support so that these patients will regain their eye sights and for other services, we provide to the sick and poor for their well-being.

We are grateful to Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss. R and Monsignor Robert J, Fuhrman, Archdiocesan Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. We treasure the generosity of Rev. Ernest G. Rush and the parishioners of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Lyndhurst, NJ. You and your various families are remembered in our prayers especially during this COVID-I9 Pandemic in our time.

God bless you for all you do!

With prayerful wishes,

Sr. Regina Mgbakor
